Dr S P Rao, Professor in Preventive & Social Medicine is in possession of post graduate degree in Community Medicine and Hospital Administration. An alumni of Andhra Medical College, Dr Rao studied and practiced community Medicine under Dr Sushila Nayar at Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Sevagram. He has served for Government of Maharashtra for nearly 25 years. Before joining this institute he was working as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) at Directorate of Medical Education & Research, Mumbai and in-charge of Medical Research Council of Maharashtra, a Govt of Maharashtra venture. He is qualified in Epidemiology, Computer technology and Infectious diseases. He is involved research projects funded by WHO, ICMR, SIDA, DANIDA, NRHM and Government of Maharashtra. He was involved in field surveys in Karnataka, Kerala, Chattisgarh and Maharashtra. He is a recipient of WHO fellowship in Hospital Administration, and was also awarded by Government of Maharashtra for his exemplary contribution to rural health. He is instrumental in introduction of compulsory Research Methodology and Biostatistics training for post graduate teachers and residents in Maharashtra. He is an invited faculty for research methodology course at various medical and Dental Colleges in Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh. With his special interest in Leprosy, he was appointed consultant epidemiologist to WHO regional centre on Social Aspects of Leprosy. He has vast field experience in Epidemiology and has authored 8 books for graduates and post graduates. He is one of the key trainers for National Programs such as Integrated Disease Surveillance Program, NRHM, RNTCP, CSSM, IMNCI. He is involved in teaching and training medical graduates and post graduates since last 35 years.
