Gandhi Institute of Technology and Management, popularly known as GITAM, was founded in 1980 by an inspired group of eminent intellectuals and industrialists with the objective of promoting a world-class institution of higher learning in diverse fields of professional education. In 2007, this premier institution of higher learning and research with Global standards was declared a deemed to be university u/s 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, by Ministry of Human Resources and Development, Govt. of India. GITAM is located in a picturesque campus at Visakhapatnam and Off Campus Centres in Hyderabad and Bengaluru. With a multi disciplinary approach, GITAM offers different programs at UG, PG and Doctoral levels in - Technology, Pharmacy, Science, Management, International Business, Architecture and Law.
GITAM Institute of Medical Sciences and Research established for admitting 150 MBBS students annually to give world class training. Initially, it is operational with 650 beds with all basic specialities like Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics, Gynaecology, Orthopaedics, Opthalmology, Paediatrics, Dermatology, ENT, Psychiatry, Pulmonology, Physiotherapy etc. There are 11 Nos. of operation theatres(9 major, 2 minor) to cater to the needs of various specialities. The out-patient departments are run by qualified specialists. The emergency medicine and trauma departments are working round the clock. It is adequately equipped to deal with all emergencies. The Intensive care unit is well equipped with monitors, ventilators and other supportive systems for giving necessary treatment to the critically ill-patients. The well established and state-of-the art central clinical laboratory and modern blood bank facilities are available for handling all types of elective and emergency medical and Surgical problems. The Hospital will be upgraded to a full fledged 850 beds teaching hospital with all basic and super speciality departments to take care of tertiary medical problems.

The Medical College building adjacent to the Hospital is constructed with all modern facilities basing on the guidelines and norms of Medical Council of India. The student labs, class rooms, library, auditorium and research labs are all designed on par with the most advanced institutions in the country.
