Microbiology

Medical Microbiology is a branch of Medical Science concerned with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases. The diagnostic laboratories & the facilities include state of the art equipment like automated blood culture system BacT Alert, ELISA, Real time PCR and conventional microbiological tools for diagnostic services. The Clinical Microbiology faculty are involved in wide range of microscopic and clinical reporting in Bacteriology, Virology, Serology, Immunology, Parasitology , Mycobacteriology , Mycology and Anaerobic Baceteriology.

The Microbiology Department has NABL accredited and ICMR Recognized BSL – 2 RT PCR testing Laboratory , HIV laboratory (FICTC) and the DOTS Microscopy Centre of the National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme functions in the department.

The department has taken a major initiative in Hospital Infection Control. GIMSR Microbiologists play a crucial role in the hospital infection control committee and in the biomedical waste management by applying methods of disinfection and sterilization and monitoring of biomedical waste management in GIMSR Hospital to control and prevent hospital and community acquired infections.

Teaching is an integral part of the departmental activity & training is imparted to the students using Case-based learning along with applied topics being taught by horizontal integration i.e. by interacting with the clinicians. The mission of the Department of Microbiology at GITAM Institute of Medical Sciences and Research is to impart quality education to undergraduate students of MBBS, Dental, Nursing & Paramedical courses in the discipline of Microbiology and to expand the body of knowledge of this scientific field through research. The Department also guides the Postgraduate students of GITAM University in their Research Projects.
